So, who are you and what is this place?
Glad you asked!
Songs for the Unadapted Ones offers writing and tools for living from a very-late diagnosed Autistic writer living with long COVID—designed for those of us inhabiting bodyminds outside the norm—voluntarily or involuntarily. For more about this space, the inaugural post is a great place to start.
All of you is welcome here.

In brief, I am an award-winning writer/director, whose writing has been produced and published internationally; my first book, a hybrid collection, THE MORTALITY SHOT is out with Liquid Cat Books; recent publications in Autism in Adulthood, Oldster, Prairie Schooner, [PANK], Heavy Feather Review. I foundedApocryphal Theatre when in London (2003-11), which work was the basis of my fully-funded PhD from University of Northampton (2009); all my experimental stage texts were streamed in 2022, commissioned by Radio Art Zone in Europe. After burning out yet again in 2011, I began focusing on writing prose and eventually leading writing retreats in Scotland. I live back in NYC with my husband and cat where I am writing a researched memoir about reframing my life after being diagnosed Autistic at 57 in 2021 while recovering from long-haul COVID, weaving in the history of the mis/treatments and mis/conceptions of autism.
I will post future works in future Substack.
Why subscribe?
Subscribe to get full access to the newsletter and publication archives.
All posts will be free to subscribers. Paid subscriptions allow you to comment and more actively join the community, including a space where we write together apart on Zoom. If you want to join and don’t have funds for a paid subscription, simply email me and explain your interest, and I will give you access through a gift subscription.
If you can afford a paid subscription, this both supports my writing (and if you can reach to a supporter contribution, this also helps subsidize gift subscriptions to those who can’t). I am spending a lot of time on each post—and especially as someone with long COVID living on disability—any support is greatly appreciated and ensures the continuation of my offerings here. I used to be able to offer all kinds of time and writing for free and be able to do other work, but that is no longer the case, hence the urgency of the ask.
